Ebara Corporation has successfully completed a performance test using LPG for an in-tank pump for liquid ammonia, which is expected to be a carbon-free fuel.
Successful LPG Test of Commercial-Scale In-Tank Pump for Liquid Ammonia

1. Background
Amid the global trend toward decarbonization, studies are underway, primarily in Japan, to use ammonia, which does not emit CO2 when burned, as an effective fuel for combating global warming. With plans for the use of ammonia in power plants and large-scale receiving terminals underway, we have manufactured an in-tank pump exclusively for liquid ammonia that can be installed inside ammonia metal tanks or PC tanks (prestressed concrete tanks) and used as a pump for discharging or transferring liquid ammonia. We have successfully conducted performance tests using LPG (-50°C), which has properties close to those of liquid ammonia (-33°C).
2-1 Overview
The in-tank pump that was tested using LPG this time is unique in that it is installed inside the tank and operates while submerged in liquid ammonia. The tests were conducted at the Elliott Group's LPG testing facility, a group company of our company, using a pump of the same size as that used for commercial ammonia use. By conducting tests in an environment closer to the actual liquid, it is possible to obtain more reliable data and verify the soundness of the product. This product is expected to play an essential role in the spread of the fuel ammonia supply chain, and will contribute to the safe and reliable transport of liquid ammonia at fuel ammonia power plants and fuel ammonia terminals in the future.
3. Future developments
Many ammonia combustion plants are planned to reduce greenhouse gas (CO2) emissions from thermal power plants, and the demand for non-leakage pumps is expected to increase.
We will accelerate our efforts to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and contribute to the realization of a sustainable society as outlined in our long-term vision, "E-Vision 2030."
By addressing key ESG issues based on our long-term vision and medium-term management plan, the EBARA Group aims to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and further improve our corporate value.
