Kinugawa Upper Dam Group Cooperative Facility Tour Held

Scene of the tour Scene of the tour

On November 18, EBARA Corporation (hereinafter referred to as "EBARA") held a site tour of the Kinugawa Upstream Dam Group Cooperative Facility (hereinafter referred to as the "Facility") for fourth-grade students of Kinugawa Elementary School in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture. This facility is a rare facility*1 that regulates the amount of water in two dams. The Kinugawa River upstream dams play a variety of roles, including flood damage prevention, stable water supply to fields and cities downstream of the dams, and hydroelectric power generation, and this facility, which we visited this time, plays a part in these roles.

1. Background and Objectives

EBARA supports the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism's "promotion of securing and training workers in the construction industry" and holds site tours for children. Fourth-grade elementary school students who participated in the tour are learning about where and how the water around them reaches the faucet in their social studies class. The purpose of this tour is to deepen the understanding of the dam-related facilities in the area where they live and the people who work there, and to tell them about Ebara's business by directly seeing the large pumps and other equipment that are not usually seen.

Overview of the Facility

This facility connects the Ijuri Dam and the Kawaji Dam with a tunnel (water conduit) in the mountains, and adjusts the water volume of both dams. Since the Ijuri Dam has a small storage capacity, water that cannot be stored can be temporarily deposited through a tunnel to the Kawaji Dam, which has a large storage capacity. On the other hand, if the water storage capacity of the Ijuri Dam is low, water can be sent back from the Kawaji Dam. Ebara's pumps are responsible for this water supply. The elementary school students went down to the pump room, which is located about 45 meters below the ground, and learned about the role of the giant pump while touching it*2.

3. Future developments

This was the fourth time this tour had been held. EBARA will continue to value communication with many stakeholders. With the mindset of competing and challenging ourselves as a leading manufacturer in the pump business, we will continue to contribute to the development of infrastructure facilities that can solve customer issues and provide peace of mind.

The EBARA Group aims to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and further enhance its corporate value by addressing key ESG issues based on its long-term vision and medium-term management plan.
