Jet Fan (Hamayama Tunnel) Jet Fan (Hamayama Tunnel)

EBARA Corporation (hereinafter, EBARA) has delivered 10 jet fans and a complete set of ventilation systems to the Shiroi, Horiuchi, and Hamayama tunnels constructed in the Fudainoda area of the Sanriku Coastal Road, commissioned by the Tohoku Regional Development Bureau of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.

1. Background and Objectives

The Sanriku Coastal Road, which stretches about 360 km from Sendai City in Miyagi Prefecture to Hachinohe City in Aomori Prefecture, is a major infrastructure that contributes to logistics and tourism and supports the local economy. Although it was damaged in many places by the massive earthquake in 2011, the entire line was opened in December 2021 as roads, piers and tunnels were built and maintained as a "reconstruction road". The road, which was developed to avoid tsunami inundation areas, will continue to support industry and livelihoods in peacetime and serve as an uninterrupted network to support evacuation and lifesaving in times of disaster.

2-1 Overview

Jet fans create a flow in the air in the tunnel to prevent poor visibility due to the influence of exhaust gas of moving vehicles. In the event of a fire, smoke is also prevented from spreading and flue gas is removed after the fire is extinguished.
The ventilation control system helps reduce running costs by ensuring efficient operation of the jet fan in accordance with the constantly changing wind direction, wind speed and concentration of substances in the air in the tunnel.
