Ebara Corporation (hereinafter referred to as Ebara) received the Invention Encouragement Award for its patents related to the "Splitter-type Silencer" and "Guard Mouth, a Vortex Prevention Device for Horizontal Axis Pumps" at the "2021 Kanto Region Invention Awards" sponsored by the Japan Institute of Invention and Innovation.

1. Background

The Regional Invention Awards divide the country into eight regions and recognize engineers and researchers who have contributed to excellent inventions, their implementation, and their guidance, encouragement, and development in each region. It was established in 1921 with the aim of contributing to the advancement of science and technology and the development of industry.

2. Overview of the awarded patents

(1) Splitter-type silencer
In ventilation facilities for road tunnels, etc., silencers are installed in the ventilation duct to prevent noise from various sound sources such as ventilation fans from leaking outside. This invention devised an internal flow passage shape for the silencer to effectively reduce low-frequency noise without increasing the pressure loss of the silencer. The reduction in pressure loss has the effect of reducing the power costs of blowers and the number of silencers that need to be installed, and was therefore recognized for contributing to reduced equipment and construction costs. This invention has already been commercialized as a splitter type silencer and has been highly praised.

(2) Guard Mouth, a vortex prevention device for horizontal shaft pumps
As a measure against recent torrential rains, there is an increasing need to lower the operating water level and increase the amount of discharged water while still using the existing water tanks at drainage pumping stations, but measures to prevent harmful vortices are necessary. Previously, this issue was addressed with civil engineering structures, but the invention of the Guard Mouth, a vortex prevention device, was recognized for improving the functionality and reliability of pumps while reducing costs.
