Ebara Corporation (hereinafter referred to as "Ebara") has been awarded the Kanto Regional Agricultural Administration Office Director's Award at the "2020 Kanto Regional Agricultural Administration Office Agricultural and Rural Development Project Excellent Construction Awards" organized by the Kanto Regional Agricultural Administration Office, which is under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. This award recognizes the results of the repair and maintenance work on the pump equipment at the Ina West District No. 1 Pumping Station (hereinafter referred to as this pumping station).

1. Background

Kamiina District, Nagano Prefecture, where this pumping station is located, is a plateau that reaches an altitude of 900m at its highest point and is characterized by its many rice paddies, farm fields, and orchards. Pumping stations are required to provide a stable water supply to farmland on high ground, but they also contribute to fire prevention water, groundwater recharge※1, and ecosystem conservation.

The core irrigation and agricultural facilities in this area were constructed by the national government around 1975, but in recent years have seen a decline in performance and an increase in maintenance costs due to aging. Therefore, in consideration of maintaining agricultural production and stabilizing agricultural management in the future, a national facility function preservation project was launched in 2012.
EBARA solves each issue in water infrastructure, including water supply and sewerage systems and irrigation ※2, by providing comprehensive engineering services including proposals, design, procurement, mechanical equipment construction, and after-sales service for pumps and other equipment.

2-1 Overview

This pumping station is responsible for supplying large amounts of water to the fields every year during the irrigation season.※3 This award is in recognition of Ebara's efforts to carry out the construction work over a period of more than two years while ensuring sufficient water was supplied to the fields, and of its efforts to measure the performance of the existing pumps, carry out necessary maintenance, and restore the pumping capacity.

3. Future developments

Ebara's long-term vision, "E-Vision 2030," aims to support "an earth-friendly society, social infrastructure where people can live safely and securely, and a world where people do not have to worry about water or food," and to "contribute to the creation of a sustainable society." Ebara's social systems business will support the strengthening of social infrastructure through the development of pumps with improved drainage capacity and the provision of easily maintained equipment and services.

By addressing key ESG issues based on its long-term vision and medium-term management plan, the Ebara Group will strive to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and further improve its corporate value.

※1 Recharge: Water seeping into the soil and storing as groundwater in an aquifer.
※2 Irrigation: Drawing water from rivers, reservoirs, etc., and artificially supplying and draining water to and from fields. The pumps at the pumping station are responsible for water supply and drainage. *3 Irrigation season: The period from April, when rice planting begins, to September, when rice harvesting takes place. Since a lot of water is drawn to the fields, pumps are operated at the pumping station while managing the water.
