1. Background

JSEC is a free research contest for science, technology and mathematics that began in 2003 under the auspices of the Asahi Shimbun. We aim to raise the level of science and technology in Japan by promoting mathematical education.
EBARA has a long-term vision of implementing advanced ESG-based management in E-Vision2030. Since 2018, as part of social contribution activities that contribute to the development of global human resources that support the next generation, the JSEC has been providing continuous support through the Ebara Award.

2-1 Overview

JSEC2020 Final Review Board was held online on December 12 and 13. In the current fiscal year, we received 286 research applications from all over the country, from which 32 studies entered the final screening committee.
from mid-November, we selected five more studies as candidates for the EBARA Award, and on the day of the final screening committee, we made a presentation and a question-and-answer session, and selected the following studies as the EBARA Award:

JSEC2020 EBARA Award

Winner:Hamamatsu Municipal High School 2nd year Yukai YubashiResearch theme:Machine learning What is the skeleton-based travel speed prediction model
~Kirin not faster than the cheetah? ~
[Lecture by Ebara Corporation Executive Officer Takuji Sofugawa]

This study began with the animal love of Yuhashi-san. The curiosity of what determines the speed at which animals run, the scientific inquiry of seeking to clarify it, the flexibility of the idea of using machine learning, the challenging spirit of trying to learn and use it from scratch, the enthusiasm of carefully picking up data on many animals, all of which led to this study. Then, by considering the relationship between the skeleton and the running speed and deriving the appropriate synthetic variables, we succeeded in eliciting the correlation between the two, and furthermore, we give depth to the research by the idea of applying this result to an extinct saber tiger in ancient times.
This approach to Yubashi-san's research leads to the "heat and sincerity" that we advocate as the founding spirit, and because the results of the research are also excellent, we judged that it would be suitable for the Ebara Award.

3. Future developments

Ebara Corporation will continue to contribute to the development of human resources who will lead the next generation through social contribution activities related to science and technology.

The EBARA Group aims to achieve sustainable development goals (SDGs) by tackling ESG important issues based on its long-term vision and medium-term management plan, and further improve its corporate value.
