Received an order for improvement of pump equipment at the Showa Drainage Station of the Tokyo Metropolitan Area Outer Spillway ― Improvement and maintenance of one of the largest gas turbines for pump drives in Japan ―

Ebara Corporation (hereinafter referred to as "Ebara") is pleased to announce that it has received an order for the improvement and maintenance work of a gas turbine, which is one of the pump drive equipment, at the Showa Drainage Station (hereinafter referred to as the "Drainage Plant"), a Tokyo Metropolitan Area Outer Drainage Canal that is responsible for drainage during rainwater in the middle reaches of the Nakagawa and Ayase River basins.

1. Background

The Tokyo Metropolitan Area Outer Spillway is one of the world's largest*1 underground spillways (underground rivers) located in Kasukabe City, Saitama Prefecture. Compared to other regions, this area has a lower land and more prone to water accumulation, and because there are several small and medium-sized rivers, flood damage during heavy rains has been seen more often since the period of high economic growth, when development progressed. At this facility, rainwater that has risen in each river is collected at the drainage station through an underground spillway with a total length of 6.3 km, and it is safely discharged into the Edo River with the power of a large pump, thereby reducing flood damage.
EBARA solves the problems faced by water infrastructure through comprehensive engineering of proposals, design, procurement, machinery and equipment construction, and after-sales service of pumping equipment.

2-1 Overview

The drainage capacity of the large pumps installed in the basement of the drainage station is 50 m3 (about 50 tons) per second per unit. The pump's drive equipment is a modified gas turbine developed for reliable aircraft. The project will include improvements and maintenance work and comprehensive test runs to maintain the reliability of the 14,000-horsepower gas turbine and peripheral equipment.
