The custom pump business in South America has a long history, with deliveries dating back to the early 1970s. In 1975, our first overseas production base, Ebara Industrias Mecânicas e Comercio Ltda., produced deep well pumps. Even before the establishment of EBAS (the predecessor of the current EBAS), Ebara has been providing customized pump products manufactured in Japan as well as service and support.
Since then, we have delivered customized pumps to various industries, such as water and sewage, steel, electricity, coal-fired power, and fertilizer plants, not only in Brazil but also throughout South America, including Argentina, Chile, Venezuela, and Colombia. Then, in the 1980s, the decline of the Brazilian economy led to hyperinflation, and domestic procurement of pumps became the norm, replacing imported pumps. As a result, the network of custom pump customers in South America was cut off.
Since its establishment, EBAS has been producing standard pumps, mainly deep well pumps. The design, manufacture and testing of the custom pump body is carried out at Ebara's Futtsu Factory, one of the largest custom pump factories in the world, and is linked to factories in China and Vietnam, making it possible to cover the needs of custom pumps in South America through Ebara's global production system.
EBAS has been strengthening its service and support department since 2010 in order to regain its custom pump customers. Specifically, we have conducted interviews with our clients' maintenance departments, plant operation departments, and process design departments, and have promoted the following services:
Through these services, the number of requests from customers gradually increased, and we received orders for custom pump products from customers in Uruguay in 2017 and Colombia in 2018. In 2020, we received the first order for a vertical pump in Brazil in 50 years. The pumps ordered this time will be manufactured at the factory of Ebara Vietnam Pump Company Limited (Vietnam), the global production base for custom pumps, and are scheduled for shipment in March 2021.
In order to improve the profitability of its custom pump business in its medium-term management plan "E-Plan2022," EBARA has set the goal of capturing the different market needs of each region, improving profitability, and strengthening service and support.
As the best solution provider for custom pumps, EBAS will earn the trust of customers through product installation, trial operation support, modifications and improvements, and life cycle extension proposals, leading to an expansion of EBARA's share of custom pumps in the South American market.
By addressing important ESG issues based on its long-term vision and medium-term management plan, the EBARA Group will strive to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and further improve its corporate value.
